The Upside of the Downturn – a new edition coming in August

I’m delighted to report that The Upside of the Downturn will be issued in a revised paperback edition this August.
This book was first intended as a guide for managers in the 2008 – 2009 recession, and it was certainly gratifying to hear from readers. They seemed to think the book identified the most important issues they were facing – one reader asked me, “Were you in our meetings?” – and they appreciated the insights, which came from managers who had succeeded best in previous recessions.
The good news is that readers apparently continue to find the book valuable, even though the recession is over. They just keep buying it. My guess is that’s partly because good managing in a recession is just good managing, period. Plus, the recession may be over, but it doesn’t feel that way to a lot of managers. They’re still looking for guidance.
So Penguin’s business imprint, Portfolio, will publish a revised version that I’m working on now. Instead of being focused on the recession, it will be about managing whenever the environment is tough. To reflect the change, we’re changing the subtitle. The full title will now be The Upside of the Downturn: Management Strategies for Difficult Times.
I hope you’ll watch for it in August, and I hope you’ll find it valuable.
